About the EASA Drone Exams

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) sets the rules for drone operations across all EU member states. Under the Open Category, there are three subcategories: A1, A2, and A3, each with different rules about where and how you can fly.

The A1/A3 competency exam is required for all drone pilots and is taken online through your national aviation authority. It consists of 40 multiple-choice questions with a 75% pass mark and is free in most countries.

The A2 CofC is an additional certificate for flying closer to people. It requires completing a training course and passing a 30-question exam, also at 75%. DronePrep covers all five knowledge areas for both exams.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between A1/A3 and A2?

A1 allows flying over (but not assemblies of) people with drones under 250g. A3 is for flying far from people with any Open Category drone. A2 requires the CofC and allows flying closer to people with drones under 2kg at reduced speed.

Is the A1/A3 exam free?

In most EU member states, the A1/A3 competency exam is free and taken online through your national aviation authority's website.

Do EASA rules apply in the UK?

No. Since Brexit, the UK has its own CAA rules. The UK A2 CofC is a separate qualification from the EASA A2 CofC. DronePrep offers practice tests for both.

Which EU countries use EASA rules?

All 27 EU member states plus Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland follow EASA drone regulations. Each country's national aviation authority administers the exams locally.

How long is the EASA drone licence valid?

The A1/A3 proof of competency is valid for 5 years. The A2 CofC is also valid for 5 years. Both must be renewed through your national aviation authority.
